Udzungwa Mountains National Park: A Natural Wonder of Tanzania
Established in 1992, Udzungwa Mountains National Park is a protected haven for nature lovers and adventure seekers. The park was officially inaugurated by Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands, the founder of the World Wildlife Fund (WWF). Its name derives from “Wadsungwa,” referring to a sub-tribe of the Hehe people who historically inhabited the mountain slopes.
Spanning an impressive 1,990 km², the park is geographically divided between two regions: 20% lies in Morogoro, while the remaining 80% extends into Iringa’s southern highlands.
Udzungwa is accessible by road from major Tanzanian cities such as Dar es Salaam (380 km), Arusha, Kilimanjaro, and Mbeya. For those preferring air travel, Msolwa and Kilombero airstrips are the closest options, followed by a vehicle transfer to the park's main gate.
Note: Visitors should coordinate transportation with bus companies, tour operators, or air travel agents to ensure smooth connections.
The park boasts numerous waterfalls formed by river streams cascading through dense forests, creating a serene and picturesque environment.
Udzungwa offers trekking opportunities to its highest peaks: Luhomero (2,576 m) and Mwanihana (2,500 m). While hiking is possible year-round, the dry season is preferred for safer and more enjoyable climbs.
The rainforest is rich in biodiversity, with over 2,500 plant species, including three endemic plants and 160 with medicinal properties.
Visitors can engage in various activities, from thrilling mountain climbs to tranquil nature walks:
Udzungwa offers a range of accommodations, from public to special campsites within the park. There are also options outside the park for those seeking more comfort.
